Videotapes (about 400 tapes), CD/ROM information sources (about 186), and some audio-cassettes, which are included among the videotapes, are listed below in broad subject categories. They are available for loan for use by students or teachers at home or in the classroom. They may be reserved in advance: call x1402 or x1401. If no answer, leave a message on our voice mail. From outside the building dial 526-2808. VCRs, monitors, and tape players must be arranged through the academic departments. The library does not lend out this equipment. We can demonstrate CD/ROMs - BY APPOINTMENT. There are three computers available for independent use of CD/ROMS in the library.
Also listed are 69 videotapes stored in the Teachers' Center (marked:TC), and 32 videotapes stored in the English Department (marked:ED).
To help teachers of different subjects identify useful materials, each videotape may be listed in more than one subject area. However, each CD/ROM is listed in only one of the subject areas. Therefore teachers looking for useful CD/ROMS in one subject area may want to look over the listings in other subject areas to discover useful materials. Examples of such materials are the History Through Art CD/ROM series and the History and Culture of... series, both listed under Social Studies.
Students are permitted to borrow materials listed here if they agree
on a specific date of return, usually in 1 or 3 days. This will
insure that materials are not forgotten and that more students have
an opportunity to use them. Questions about movies come up often. Which actors starred in which
version of Hamlet? What year did Frank Capra direct It's a Wonderful
Life? What other films did he direct? In which production of Julius
Caesar did Marlon Brando play the role of Marc Antony? Answers to
questions like these can be found on the web in the Internet Movie Database. Click on
this link to get to the IMDB. When your browser opens the IMDB, plug in the name of the movie you want to know about in the box in the upper left hand
corner that says Search the database for. You should be able to find all of the movies listed below. The IMDB will give you a short, or long, plot outline, a review by Leonard Maltin, memorable quotes,
a list of the complete cast and the role each actor played, length and other information which may
help teachers and students prepare lessons or assignments. Of course, the short educational documentaries will not be covered by the IMDB. Some of these may be found in the web site for The Library Video Company which offers descriptive information about many short stories, biographies and other videos, including those produced by Schlessinger Media and Schlessinger Science Library. Still another source of information is Films for Humanities which includes links to the BBC Educational Collection and Cambridge Educational films. We strongly urge teachers to preview tapes they plan to use in class. While we have selected these tapes from vendors' lists which claim to offer material suitable for high school students, we can not guarantee that they actually are suitable because we have not screened and evaluated each one. As you may know, works of literature that are suitable for high school in the original edition are sometimes changed in the screen version in a way that makes them clearly unsuitable for use in your lessons for high school students. Don't embarrass yourself by using a film that you thought would fit into your lesson but which you didn't actually preview. It takes more time but it's time well spent.
Keep in mind also the great variety of ways that audio-visual material can be used. For instance, selected portions of a long video may be shown as part of a lesson, instead of the whole of a long tape. Remember: "The videotape is not the lesson." Teachers agree that simply showing a videotape for the entire period is usually not appropriate or effective as a teaching method. Showing short segments of long tapes to stimulate discussion or writing activities or to illustrate a particular point will be much more effective.
Teachers can help make this collection more useful in a number of ways. First, of course, rewind the tapes after you use them. (We have no video equipment here.) Return tapes and CDs in the boxes or cases in which you received them. If you find homeless videotapes lying about in your classrooms, offices or at home, they may belong to the library. Please send them to us. Academy Award winning documentary series using actual newsreel footage produced by Frank Capra and the Army Signal corps and directed by Ernst Lubitsch, Anatole Litvak, Walter Huston and Anthony Villier. Music by Dmitri Tiomkin, narrated by Walter Huston.
